Many, especially new traders practice trade on a demo account before they trade real money. This is a very wise move for a number of reasons that I’ll go into later. In short, you should practice something that has as much money riding on it as forex trading does.
But there are stark differences in trading with a practice account and with trading for real. The main difference is that real trading has psychological, physical and emotional pressures that aren’t in existence when trading on a forex demo account. In fact, whenever a trader uses one of these demo’s to practice trading, they should try to simulate an environment that is closest to reality as possible. Essentially, what I am saying is that if you’re going to practice, do it like it’s for real.
The most basic mistake most people make when they are using a forex demo account is not practicing with it like it’s for real. For example, sometimes when someone is paper trading and they are losing big on a certain open position, they just reset the whole thing. You can’t do that in real life. In real life, you would have lost that money and you should lose it in the practice run so you know what it’s like and so you can evaluate why you lost on that trade.
If you only finish practicing on your winning trades, you won’t learn anything, except that you’ll think forex trading is easy. I know no one likes to lose, but believe me, it’s much better to lose on a practice account than on your real trading account. You don’t have much room for mistakes in this game. You have to know what you are doing and how to handle all kinds of different situations. If you don’t, the forex market will eat you whole.
Trading in real life is really hard. Only the strong survive, and you won’t know until you’ve tried it. Even those with really great forex trading strategies in the beginning discover that it’s not as easy as they thought it was going to be when they try them out on a practice account. When you actually do it in real life, it’s exponentially more difficult because you are using real money. There is a pressure and stress that comes with trading in real life that you only get a taste of on a demo account.
