Before you think about trading stocks in this manner, you need to have a basic understanding on how to trade stocks normally. There’s quite a bit to shorting a stock, but if you don’t know the traditional way of investing or trading, you could lose more than you’ll ever want to. Think of this article as your guide to shorting stocks for dummies. What I mean by that is, I’ll try to break it down in a way that a beginner investing in the market will be able to understand. I was trading stocks for a few years before I started shorting any. The reason for that is you can lose more money shorting a stock than you can by investing in it.

Typically when an investor buys a stock, he is looking for it to go up in value. The old buy low, sell high may come to mind. Most of my trading is for the purpose of the stock price to rise. In the case of shorting a stock, the trader is looking for the stock price to fall. Yes that’s right, buy high and sell low. I call them traders because they are not looking to see the company grow, just their portfolio.

Let’s look at an example, company XYZ’s stock price is $100 per share. For whatever reason, maybe the company isexpected to release a bad quarter because of the economy or has had some bad situation happen recently like what happened to BP (British Petroleum). A trader will go out and “borrow” shares from another trader or a broker and pay them the current stock price of $100 per share on the grounds that he will return the share within a certain time period. The trader turns around and sells the shares at the current price and takes the money for other transactions.

During the period, the stock price falls to $75 per share. Now he has to return the shares to whomever he borrowed them from, so he buys the share at the lower price and gives them back to the broker or trader he got them from. He has now made $25 per share without ever owning them. This process happens all the time, but if you are not careful in your research, you will lose (and in some cases, lose big).

The reason I say you can lose big is because unlike traditional trading where if you buy a stock at $10 per share, you can only lose $10 per share. When you short a stock and the price rises, you stand the chance of losing more than just $10 per share, especially if the stock price jumps to $30 a share.

So if you’re going to short stocks, be prepared for what may happen if you’re wrong.

If you are interested in making that extra dollar and think that the stock market is the perfect place to do it, think again. Yes, there is money to be made on the market but it is not as easy as imagined. Stock market for beginners can be difficult as well as confusing. There is a huge amount of information that has to be ingested and this can be a daunting task for a newcomer. The process of learning has made many people give up and start looking for other avenues.

Sometimes the hardest part is simply figuring out on which market the stock trades. NASDAQ traded stocks, for example, always have a four-letter symbol.

If the stock you’re considering has three letters or less, then it’s market is the NYSE or the AMEX. Foreign companies are also represented in the market, and these are always a five-letter symbol with either a Y or F at the end.

The reason for the ticker’s unusual appearance can be found in its history. Thomas Edison’s telegraph, which was the inspiration for the stock market ticker, was also known as ticker tape for many years. Edison realized that traditional methods of reporting stock numbers were too slow, so he found a way to convert his telegraph into the stock ticker.

The electronic scrawl we see on our TVs has long replaced the old paper ticker, but the design is still based on Edison’s idea for quickly delivering stock information. The information contained on the ticker represents real time numbers and information about the companies that are traded on the markets.

Anyone who wants to trade on the stock market must be able to read and understand a stock market ticker. Penny stocks won’t be listed there though, and to get more information about them you should buy a penny stocks for dummies book. Being a successful trader is only possible if you follow the stock market tickers closely and learn from the information that they provide.

But learning how to buy stocks is different than learning when to sell them. You can lose money if you don’t sell the stocks you own and figuring out the best time to sell your stocks is vital in order to make money.

Regardless of the amount of time you believe is right to hold onto a stock, a time will come when you have to sell it. The perfect time is not easy to determine. You might miss out on more money if you sell the stock too soon. You might be caught holding a stock worth nothing if you don’t sell it soon enough.

A first step you should take is to examine a stock chart which tells you about a particular stock and how it has performed in the past. Such a chart can tell you if a stock is going up, going down, is volatile, or is steady over a period of time.

Secondly, you will want to take a look at the company. If you hear that the company is struggling, or will be going through some legal proceedings soon, you should most likely sell prior to the situation deteriorating any further.

In addition, if the company is reducing expenditures, you should probably think about selling that particular stock fairly quickly. If a company is making a profit, you probably are not going to read that they are reducing expenses. But, if the company is struggling, a first move that is frequently made is to start cutting costs in order to retain as much money as possible.

People who are buying stocks for the first time will find that it is often harder to know when to sell them than when to buy. Determining when to sell your stocks is extremely important if you are to make money playing the stock market. Prior to selling them, however, you have to decide when is the best time to let them go. Becoming a member of a trading website on the Internet can really help you have a successful experience trading on the stock market.

And due to the intertwining of global economies, the effects are being felt across the pond in the American markets as well.

If you are a newbie investor, the turmoil of the markets might be giving you a headache. However, if you are able to keep your wits about you, you can see these peaks and valleys for what they are: buying opportunities for long term stock picks.

Let’s face it, the way to make money on the stock market is based on four words: buy low, sell high. And yet, this concept escapes most people as the unsophisticated investors tend to move in herds. They buy when some talking head on TV hypes up a company telling his viewers that its shares are a good buy. The problem is, you’re not the only viewer. By the time you have heard about this “stock tip”, the shares are probably overbought and is awaiting a correction. Therefore, if you’re looking for a value stock pick, it’s best to do your own homework and not rely on anyone else.

When you’re looking for value stocks, it is often the case that you have to be a contrarian investor and go against the grain. However, this is when the most money is made – when people are panicking due to one crisis or another. If you are confident in your research and know that the company has intrinsic value that will bounce back in the future, then consider it a pick for your portfolio.

The bottom line is, the sky is not falling because of these blips in the global economy. These severe corrections and periods of recession will occur several times in one’s lifetime. Instead of viewing these times as a negative, the savvy investor will take advantage of these situations and making money with long term stock picks.

Granted you can’t go the New York Stock Exchange or NASDAQ with a clipped coupon to buy Apple or Google at 20% off, but with some research, you may be able to uncover an undervalued stock that everyone else has missed so far.

Investors searching for undervalued stocks are a different breed. They tend to be more methodical in their research as opposed to other investors. Most investors like to hop around on the latest, hottest trends to make money. These are the momentum traders. This type of trader looks to see what stock or sector is going up the fastest. They then jump on board and hope to get out of the stock just as the price stops accelerating. You can certainly make money trading like this, especially in an overheated market, but then you have to hope you’re smart and fast enough to get out before everyone else does. You saw this type of trading during the dot com boom in the early 2000’s. People would buy a stock in a company only because it was rising. Investors didn’t care what the company produced or what its balance sheet look like. It was going up so just buy it! But we all saw how that party ended.

Purchasing undervalued stocks isn’t as sexy or exciting as being a momentum trader, but if done properly will give you steady profits over the long term. You will be looking at companies that have been producing solid profits year in and year out. Because they tend to be boring stocks, they are often overlooked. This is where the smart investor comes in. Because people are not paying attention to the stock, they might not notice the company has assets on its balance sheet that are undervalued. This is where the undervalue investor gets in. In due time, analysts on Wall Street will discover this and then the price will start to move up.

Using the Internet, you can find various stock screeners to help find companies that are trading below their intrinsic value. This will help you find companies that are trading for less than their true worth. With this information, you should be able to find plenty of undervalued stocks to invest in.
