NASDAQ Closing Bell with StockTwits and Data Junkies

by Chart Shark on August 28, 2009

I wrote here that I would provide a replay of the StockTwits and Data Junkies Closing Bell Ceremony. Well, here’s a quick overview of my time in NYC, the NASDAQ Closing Bell Ceremony, and the after party.
Getting There
As mentioned in my previous post, I took this crazy midnight bus to Chinatown. The trip there was rather uneventful, until the sun came up and I couldn’t sleep anymore. This is when I noticed that the driver was driving a busload of people through busy traffic as if he was rolling in a souped up Honda Civic. He was blasting past cars [...]

In just a few hours I will be boarding a crowded bus in the middle of the night for the 6 hour trip to NYC.
I am Going to NYC Because I am a Winner
Stocktwits and Data Junkies had a contest with 1 prize for 30 people.  That prize was to join Stocktwits & Data Junkies in Times Square for the NASDAQ Closing Bell Ceremony.   I ended up winning one of these spots, and I am headed out of here in t-minus 3 hours (I should probably start packing).

Day Trading is Not an Exact Science

by Chart Shark on August 24, 2009

The great thing about science is that it full of fun facts and formulas.  The fascinating thing about trading is that it is not.
I pointed out a support level on Apple (AAPL) at 168.67 in another post. In that post, I also mentioned that I was long Apple (AAPL) above 168.67, and short below that level.  Then, this morning, I tweeted a short trade even though the price was above 168.67 on my day trading charts.
“You’re a liar!” you might have shouted; “You tricked me!  I went long because you said to go long!”  I also qualified that statement [...]

How to Identify Trends & Key Levels for Day Trading

by Chart Shark on August 23, 2009

I use this method regularly on stocks on my core watch list, and every time I pick a new “in play” stock to add to my watch list. You can use this method to identify overall trends as well as key levels to trade from.
I have chosen one of my core stocks, Apple (no pun intended), to use as an example. I always keep an eye on Apple because it has loads of volume, plenty of daily price range, and it makes predictable moves.
Starting with the weekly stock chart above, you can see that Apple (as well as [...]

Battle of the Sexes {Poll}

by Chart Shark on August 22, 2009

There’s no doubt that day trading is dominated by males. Not in quality, but certainly in quantity. I’ve set up the “Battle of the Sexes” poll to determine just how lop-sided the community is. Perhaps I’m way off and the female traders will come out en masse to prove me wrong. I’d love to see that. In case you were wondering where this poll is, I have inserted the following arrow to eliminate any ambiguity. (It’s not there anymore because the poll is now closed) I have also inserted an “other” option into the [...]

Daytraders of the Dead

by Chart Shark on August 19, 2009

What happens when you combine day trading zombies, explosions, and automatic weapons?  You get Daytraders of the Dead. This game is part Smash TV, part Dead Rising and all awesome.  The concept is very simple – zombies come and you shoot them. More zombies come, and you shoot them too, and so on.  There is a “story mode” as well as “survival mode.”  The only real difference being that the story mode has levels, while the survival mode is a constant wave of ever increasing quantities of zombies.  There are also a handful of weapons to aid in your [...]

day trading patience, daytrading patience

Goooaaal!

by Chart Shark on August 18, 2009

Day trading requires patience. One of the only things better than really nailing a trade is the satisfying sound of the ball cracking into the back of the plexiglass of an indoor soccer goal. I am not a prolific goal scorer, but I recently scored a goal that was hailed as the “Goal of the Match” in a 5-1 win. What made this goal so perfect is the same thing that is often responsible for my best trades – patience. So picture this; the field is about the size of a hockey rink, complete with wooden sideboards.  [...]

How To Trade Like a Gamer

by Chart Shark on August 11, 2009

I was born in the year of Pac-Man.  As a matter of fact, I think it’s no coincidence that it debuted a week after my birth.  They knew I was coming.  And as far back as I can remember remembering, a large portion of my life has been dedicated to gaming.  In those 30 years of gaming I believe I’ve picked up some skills that are useful when day trading.
Gamer’s Trigger Finger
When it comes time to pull the trigger, we gamers do so without hesitation.  We are no stranger to watching a screen all day and having to point and shoot at exactly the right moment.  We expect accurate [...]

Thinking Instead of Day Trading

by Chart Shark on August 6, 2009

Yesterday, AIG was a day trader’s dream. It rocketed up 9 points, and gave multiple entry signals all the way up. And did I make any money on it? No. Not one cent. Why? One thought kept me out of this trade.
It Can’t Keep Going Up
You’re damned right it can. And I know this. I’ve seen this, while day trading, a thousand times. A stock just shoots up out of nowhere. You feel the slight hum of the masses as they start to talk so you decide to take a look at the chart. There it is. The stock is [...]

Using the Prior Day’s OHLC Indicator

by Chart Shark on August 4, 2009

The OHLC Indicator is one of the simplest day trading indicators I know of. I don’t know if you’d even call it an indicator. It’s basically just doing something for me that I’m too lazy to do, and I love that because it saves me time and effort. I can use this time to do other tasks in the morning, like scanning for new stocks to add to my watch list. The OHLC indicator stands for Open, High, Low & Close. The indicator simply plots the prior day’s Open, High, Low & Close on your day trading charts.
Why is This [...]

Moving Average Crossovers and Alignment on the SPY

by Chart Shark on August 3, 2009

In a previous post I talked about the alignment of moving averages on the SPY.  I color-coded the moving averages according the colors of the rainbow for visual clarity and order. MA (5) = Red MA (10) = Orange MA (14) = Yellow MA (20) = Green MA (50) = Blue MA (100) = Indigo MA (200) = Violet
Rainbow Moving Average Update
When we took a look at these moving averages back then, the alignment was R(V)OY-G-BI.  The violet (MA 200) was the only moving average that was out of order.  Well, today this still remains the case.  We have [...]
